Thalidomide is causing constipation. What can I do?

First of all, report it to your doctor.  When I was seen at Dana-Farber, I was given a handout, which you can print and show to your doctor.  I can't stress enough that you always need to keep your treatment team informed about even what you might consider the smallest health matter!  Please read the notice that appears in the lower right corner of every screen.

Thalidomide Bowel Regimen

Bowel medicines can take a few days to a week to get into the system and begin working.  They should be taken as directed.  They are not as effective when taken intermittently.

  1. Start with Colace (Docusate Sodium) stool softener AM and PM.  Increase to 3 times a day.
  2. If needed add Senna - one to two pills AM and PM.
  3. Flax seed oil - two tablespoons per day - get in health food store.
  4. If needed, add milk of magnesia every other night at bed time.
  5. If no stool within three days, try Magnesium Citrate (ask at pharmacy - it's over the counter) 1 bottle. (Tastes better on ice.) Do not take more than once a week.  Or ask for prescription for Lactulose.

Prune juice or prunes every morning are also very effective.

Drink as much as possible - at least 2 quarts a day.
