U.S. House candidate has Multiple Myeloma

Friday, April 23, 2004

Associated Press

A Democratic candidate hoping to unseat U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart will continue campaigning even though he has cancer.

Steven Drobac Jr., 52, a candidate for Pennsylvania’s 4th Congressional District, said he learned three weeks ago that he has multiple myeloma, a cancer in the bone marrow.

Drobac has been undergoing daily radiation treatments for several weeks. Once those treatments are completed, he will begin chemotherapy.

Drobac is facing Eric Wafer of Harmony Township in Tuesday’s primary election for the Democratic nomination. Hart is running unopposed in the Republican primary.

“If anyone can beat (cancer) he can, because a lot of it is morale,” Wafer said. “Our prayers are with the guy.”

Drobac said his illness will give him a better chance to raise health care reform issues.
